Union members in Washington, D.C. have set up a food pantry to help those affected by the ongoing government shutdown, which has now lasted more than 30 days. With federal SNAP funding nearing its end, unions are providing canned goods to the public and collecting donations for local food banks that support laid-off federal workers, including some who are members of IAM Union and NFFE-IAM.
The initiative aims to address immediate needs as many federal employees face financial hardship due to the prolonged shutdown. Local food banks have seen increased demand from workers impacted by the lack of paychecks.
IAM Union and NFFE-IAM members are among those directly affected by the situation. The unions’ efforts highlight their role in supporting both their members and the broader community during this period of uncertainty.
