AF Post has announced that Uber is launching a pilot program allowing drivers to earn additional income between rides by completing digital tasks such as voice recordings, photo uploads, and document submissions. Payments for these tasks are issued within 24 hours, according to a post on X.

According to Newsweek, this new initiative builds upon Uber’s broader efforts to diversify earning opportunities for drivers within its platform. The report indicates that Uber has been exploring alternative income streams to help drivers maximize their time between rides. These include microtask-style assignments designed for flexibility and low commitment. Such initiatives align with Uber’s long-term strategy to position itself as a “multi-modal work platform,” enabling workers to shift seamlessly between ridesharing, delivery, and digital labor to enhance their earning potential.

Uber’s official newsroom blog outlines that the “Digital Tasks” pilot invites select U.S. drivers to complete small assignments such as audio recordings, image uploads, and document verifications within the Driver app. Each task specifies its estimated completion time and compensation, with Uber guaranteeing payment within 24 hours once verified. The company noted that the pilot reflects growing interest among drivers for flexible earning methods and serves as part of Uber’s ongoing investment in artificial intelligence (AI) data generation and testing workflows.

The Verge reports that this new pilot program marks a significant move into the AI data-labeling and training sector, traditionally dominated by firms like Scale AI and Amazon’s Mechanical Turk. The publication explains that tasks performed by drivers—such as speech and image capture—feed directly into AI systems to improve Uber’s technological infrastructure, including its autonomous vehicle and mapping initiatives. Analysts suggest this approach helps Uber repurpose its existing driver network as a distributed micro-labor force, potentially reducing costs compared to external AI data vendors.
