The U.S. Census Bureau released on April 16 new summary reports and data tables from the 2025 Annual Survey of Public Employment & Payroll (ASPEP), offering detailed information about state and local government employment across the United States.
The release provides important statistics that help federal, state, and local governments—as well as education and research organizations—analyze public sector employment patterns. The data are used for comparative studies of government activities and to develop components of the gross domestic product (GDP).
According to the Census Bureau, the survey includes figures on full- and part-time employment, full-time equivalent positions, and gross monthly payrolls for March 2025 by various governmental functions such as financial administration, other government administration, highways, and air transportation. An individual unit file is also available with all data items by code at the governmental unit level.
In addition to releasing new information for 2025, revised tables for both 2023 and 2024 have been made available. The Census Bureau has also published a graphic showing public sector employment per 10,000 people in selected states for 2025.
