The U.S. Census Bureau has released the 2023 Business Dynamics Statistics (BDS), providing updated measures of business activity in the United States. The data include information on job creation and destruction, as well as establishment births and deaths, and firm startups and shutdowns. These statistics are available for the overall economy and can be broken down by establishment and firm characteristics.

The BDS is an annual series that covers data from 1978 through 2023. Users can access the data through the BDS website, the Census API, or via BDS Explorer. The explorer tool offers line charts, bar charts, thematic maps, and a dashboard that allows users to create tables and charts for analyzing business dynamics.

For more information about the dataset or to use these tools, visit BDS and BDS Explorer.
