The Automobile Club of Southern California announced that gas prices in many Southern California areas rose slightly over the week of August 21, reversing the summer’s prior downward trend.

According to the Automobile Club of Southern California, as of August 21, gas prices in many areas of Southern California experienced a slight increase last week. This shift reversed the downward trend observed for most of the summer. The statewide average for self-serve regular gasoline remains at $4.49 per gallon, unchanged from the previous two weeks and 10 cents below last year. Meanwhile, the national average is $3.13, down three cents from last week and 26 cents lower than last year.

As reported on August 25, gas prices in Riverside averaged $4.41 for regular, $4.66 for midgrade, $4.83 for premium, and $4.98 for diesel. These figures show small increases from last week and yesterday while remaining near month-ago levels and below last year’s diesel price. In San Bernardino, averages were recorded at $4.46 for regular, $4.64 for midgrade, $4.85 for premium, and $5.02 for diesel—slightly higher than last week and yesterday—with most prices close to or just under year-ago figures.

“According to the Oil Price Information Service and California Energy Commission,” said Auto Club spokesperson Doug Shupe via the Automobile Club of Southern California, “gasoline inventories in the state rose over the past week, which should help to prevent large increases in pump prices.”
