Snap Inc. announced on Apr. 8 that its Topic Chats feature, introduced last year for Snapchat users aged 18 and older, has seen significant activity during the recent March Madness basketball tournament.

The company said that the #marchmadness Topic Chat became one of the most active real-time group chats on the platform as tens of thousands of fans participated live throughout the event. This highlights a growing interest among users to engage in shared, moderated public conversations centered around major cultural moments.

According to Snap Inc., instead of sharing reactions across various feeds or private messages, fans gathered in a single space to discuss game developments as they happened. The company described this as offering “a more communal, synchronous way to experience a live event, closer to watching the game together than just posting about it after the fact.”

Snap Inc. also noted that what stood out was not only the number of participants but also their behavior within these chats. The platform observed that there is strong demand for focused and well-moderated spaces where people can share their passions in real time.

As this year’s tournament concluded, Snap Inc. said “the energy of March Madness didn’t just stay on the court, it showed up in the chat.” The company suggested that this trend could signal new ways for fans to connect around future events.
