Snap Inc. announced on April 3 that its recent renaming of Spotlight to “Reals” was an April Fools’ joke, but reaffirmed its commitment to authentic, user-generated content on the platform.
The company said the playful stunt highlighted its ongoing effort to promote real and personal videos over synthetic or widely syndicated posts. According to Snap Inc., “As we focus on elevating original content on Spotlight–created using the Snapchat camera–you’ll see fewer synthetic AI videos or widely syndicated posts.” The statement added that Snapchatters use Spotlight for fresh and native content, which contributes to a more meaningful experience for users.
Snap Inc. emphasized that authenticity is central to what makes Spotlight unique, describing it as a space for “candid moments, spontaneous reactions, and everyday experiences shared by real people across Snapchat.” The company said it plans continued investment in building out Spotlight as a leading short-form video experience.
Recent trends show growing engagement with the platform. Snap Inc. reported that creators who post daily are seeing their followers grow more than ten times faster than those who do not. In the fourth quarter of 2025, Snapchat reached 474 million daily active users and 946 million monthly active users globally. The number of creators posting to Spotlight in the United States grew nearly fifty percent year-over-year during this period.
The company stated it will continue investing in tools and experiences designed to help both everyday users and creators share original content and expand their presence online. Snap Inc. concluded by saying: “So while Spotlight isn’t becoming ‘Reals,’ the spirit of it–keeping things real–is here to stay, and it’s easier than ever for Snapchatters to grow, build an audience, and go viral on Spotlight.”
