Snap Inc. has announced the upcoming release of Snap OS 2.0, the next version of its operating system for Spectacles. The update introduces several new features and interface improvements aimed at enhancing the device’s usability and expanding its capabilities.

The company is preparing for the public launch of its next-generation Spectacles in 2026. According to Snap Inc., “Snap OS is the software that brings Spectacles to life, enabling a new kind of computer and real-time AI-powered experiences that invite people to interact naturally with the world using their hands and voice.”

One significant change in Snap OS 2.0 is an overhaul of the Spectacles Browser. The redesigned browser now offers faster page loading speeds, improved power efficiency, and a minimalist user interface. Users can access favorite sites more easily through a new home screen with widgets and bookmarks. The toolbar has been updated to allow users to type or speak website URLs, navigate browsing history, refresh pages, and resize windows as needed.

WebXR support has also been added to the browser, enabling immersive augmented reality experiences directly from compatible websites.

Another feature highlighted in this update is a dedicated Spotlight Lens, which lets users view content overlaid onto their surroundings without needing a phone. As described by Snap Inc., “With the new dedicated Spotlight Lens, we’ve created a phone-free, larger-than-life experience that spatially overlays your favorite content onto the real world.”

The Gallery Lens feature allows users to review media captured on their Spectacles in an interactive format and share them via Snapchat Stories or direct messages.

To support use while traveling, Snap OS 2.0 introduces Travel Mode: “This new feature stabilizes AR content and tracking systems while you’re on the move – whether you’re on a plane, train, or sitting in the passenger seat of a car – ensuring your digital content stays anchored and stable.”

According to Snap Inc., hundreds of developers across 30 countries are working on Lenses for Spectacles. Popular options include SightCraft by Enklu, NavigatAR by Utopia Labs, Pool Assist by Studio ANRK, as well as several Lenses created internally at Snap.
