2025 marks the tenth anniversary of Snap Inc.’s Lenses, with the company highlighting the growth of its global developer community and advancements in augmented reality (AR) technology. Over the past decade, more than 400,000 developers have created over 4 million Lenses, establishing a significant ecosystem for creative expression.
Snap Inc. has announced several updates aimed at enhancing its platform for developers and creators. The company is focusing on making Snap a more developer-friendly environment, supporting creators in monetizing their work, and providing advanced tools to further AR development.
Social gaming continues to be a major feature on Snapchat, with over 175 million users engaging with Lens Games each month. The number of users sharing these games has increased by 130% compared to the previous year. Snap is introducing a Games Chat Drawer to integrate Lens Games directly into Chat and expanding the Games category in the Asset Library to streamline game development workflows. New features include Turn Based gameplay and an improved Leaderboard, with plans to launch live multiplayer matchmaking next year.
Lens Studio, Snap’s AR creation tool, is receiving new features to enable higher-fidelity and more personalized Lenses. Updates are designed to give creators greater expressive power and efficiency in their work.
Monetization options are expanding with the rollout of Lens+ Payouts, which allows creators to earn money based on engagement from Lens+ and Snapchat Platinum subscribers. Camera Kit, which brings Snap’s AR technology to external platforms, now has over 68 million monthly active users in the third quarter of the year. In response to developer feedback, mandatory branding has been removed from Camera Kit, allowing for more flexible and professional AR experiences.
Snap has introduced Lens Studio AI, a tool that assists users in building Lenses through conversational commands. It can write code, guide users through the creation process, generate complete Lenses, debug issues, and suggest assets. A new framework called Blocks enables modular Lens development at the platform layer, with options for private or community sharing.
The updated Lens Studio Mobile & Web leverages these new features, offering a chat-based creation tool that allows users to remix or create Lenses using AI-powered requests.
Snap also provided updates on its Spectacles product line. The fifth-generation Spectacles feature real-time AI-powered experiences with hand and voice interaction. Ahead of the public launch of Specs in 2026, Snap has introduced Snap OS 2.0 with performance improvements, WebXR support, and new development kits. Current work on Spectacles will remain compatible with future models.
New system-level features include Travel Mode for uninterrupted AR experiences while traveling and EyeConnect for quick setup of shared Lenses between users. Commerce Kit will allow select creators to accept payments directly within Lenses, marking the start of monetization options for Spectacles.
Several partnerships were announced, bringing experiences such as Star Wars: Holocron Histories from Industrial Light & Magic, Synth Riders, and Paramount’s Avatar: The Last Airbender to Spectacles. Additional Lens experiences from companies like Figma, Tripadvisor, and Mastercard are expected soon.
To support these developments, Snap introduced Snap Cloud in partnership with Supabase. This service provides developers with APIs, edge functions, secure storage, and real-time capabilities to build more dynamic and privacy-focused projects.
