San Bernardino is seeking volunteers for its annual Point-in-Time (PIT) Count of unhoused individuals, which will take place later this month. According to a statement on the city’s website, teams of participants will be deployed throughout San Bernardino to locate and identify people experiencing homelessness, whether they are in shelters or living outdoors.

During the event, volunteers will distribute backpacks containing essential items to those they encounter. The count is scheduled for January 22 from 5:15 a.m. to 10 a.m., with participants gathering at Gate 10 at the National Orange Show located at 930 S. Arrowhead Ave.

“A complete and accurate count is essential to address homelessness in the city,” said Cassandra Searcy, San Bernardino’s deputy director of housing and homelessness, in the statement. “Volunteer participation is crucial for a successful count, and we hope San Bernardino residents will again turn out to be an important part of the solution.”

The PIT Count is conducted under the direction of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and aims to determine the number of unhoused individuals across the country.
