Riverside University Health System – Medical Center (RUHS – MC) has been recognized by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) for its surgical care outcomes. This marks the second year in a row that RUHS – MC has received recognition for achieving meritorious outcomes in both the “All Cases” and “High-Risk” categories.
Among more than 600 hospitals participating nationwide, only 76 achieved this status, with 51 located in the United States. The recognition comes from the ACS National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP), which is a data-driven initiative aimed at advancing surgical quality.
Dr. Raul Coimbra, Surgeon-in-Chief at RUHS-MC, said, “At RUHS – Medical Center, we strive to see patients heal quickly, get back to their lives and families and experience improved quality of life. This award reflects the incredible commitment of the Medical Center to high-level care for surgical patients in Riverside County and beyond.”
Hospitals involved in NSQIP track results from inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures and report these outcomes to ACS for analysis. The ACS uses two different formulas to develop composite scores in both categories based on eight clinical areas: mortality, cardiac events, pneumonia, unplanned intubation, prolonged ventilator use over 48 hours, renal failure, surgical site infections, and urinary tract infections.
The program aims to promote improvements in patient safety and quality of care by benchmarking hospital performance across these key indicators.
