The Riverside County Transportation Commission announced on March 9 that it has awarded an $80 million contract to HDR Engineering in Claremont to begin the next phase of environmental studies for the Coachella Valley Rail project.
The move marks a significant step forward for the long-discussed rail line, which aims to provide daily passenger service along a 144-mile corridor connecting the lower desert with Los Angeles County. The proposed route will include stops at multiple sites in the Coachella Valley, as well as Riverside and Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.
Raymond Gregory, chairman of the commission, said in a statement, “At its core, Coachella Valley Rail is about offering residents, visitors, and commuter’s better choices and smart alternatives to traveling solely by automobile. While there is still work ahead, [this vote] brings us one important step closer to construction.”
According to information released by the commission, this latest contract will fund further environmental review and planning activities necessary before construction can begin. The project is expected to improve transportation options for both local residents and visitors while addressing regional mobility needs.
As planning continues, officials say additional steps remain before trains can begin running on the new corridor. The commission’s recent action signals ongoing commitment to advancing public transit infrastructure in Southern California.
