The Riverside County Suicide Prevention Coalition (SPC) will hold its annual conference on October 2 at the Palm Springs Convention Center. The event is designed to provide resources and support for communities, first responders, and educators dealing with the aftermath of suicide loss. This year’s theme focuses on best practices for postvention—supporting those affected by suicide and helping prevent future tragedies.

“Way too often, we know someone who has attempted to commit suicide or taken their own life,” said Riverside County Board Chair and Fourth District Supervisor V. Manuel Perez. “We know that depression, behavioral health issues or PTSD has been a cause of those actions. This conference provides a space to learn, to collaborate, to bring people together and to think about how we can build stronger systems of support ensuring that we don’t have to experience suicide among our friends anymore.”

The free public event begins at 8:30 a.m. and will feature keynote speaker Dr. David J. Schonfeld, founder of the National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement. Dr. Schonfeld will share his experience from more than three decades working with schools and communities facing grief.

Attendees will also hear personal accounts from individuals affected by suicide loss and participate in breakout sessions focused on accessing resources for professional practice and personal well-being.

Recent data from Riverside University Health System – Public Health indicates there were 266 confirmed suicide deaths in Riverside County in 2024. The SPC emphasizes that postvention efforts are vital not only for supporting those grieving but also as part of broader prevention strategies.

“Connection is the starting point for healing,” said Dr. Matthew Chang, Director of Riverside University Health System – Behavioral Health (RUHS-BH). “When professionals and community members come together to share knowledge and support, they open the door for recovery and lasting hope.”

Established in 2020 by the Riverside County Board of Supervisors, the SPC includes partnerships with RUHS-BH, RUHS Public Health, the Riverside County Office of Education, law enforcement agencies, community partners, and healthcare organizations. The coalition works throughout the year to raise awareness about suicide prevention through free evidence-based trainings and workshops aimed at strengthening community capacity.
