An additional adult and child in Western Riverside County have been confirmed with measles, according to Riverside University Health System — Public Health (RUHS – PH). These new cases bring the total number of confirmed measles cases in Riverside County for 2026 to three.

The adult reported having received a measles vaccination, while the child was not vaccinated. Both individuals are recovering at home.

“These additional cases of measles underscore the disease’s highly contagious nature,” said Riverside County Public Health Officer Dr. Jennifer Chevinsky.

Measles is transmitted through coughing and sneezing by an infected person. The virus can remain active in the air for up to two hours after an infected individual has left the area. People who breathe contaminated air or touch infected surfaces and then touch their eyes, nose, or mouth can become infected. Up to 90% of people who are not immune and come into close contact with someone who has measles will also become infected.

Dr. Chevinsky noted that some vaccinated individuals may still contract measles if exposed or after prolonged close contact with an infected person, particularly if their immune response to the vaccine has weakened over time or did not respond as expected. In these cases, symptoms tend to be milder.

“Now is the perfect time to make sure you and your family are vaccinated against measles,” said Dr. Chevinsky.

Health officials recommend ensuring vaccinations are up-to-date before traveling internationally or domestically, especially when visiting areas experiencing outbreaks or crowded venues such as large sporting events, theme parks, or airports.

Those unsure about their vaccination status should consult their healthcare provider. If no records exist, vaccination is strongly advised. Vaccinations are available through healthcare providers and public health clinics; walk-in appointments are accepted at all clinics, though cost and eligibility may vary. For more information on clinic locations or questions about eligibility, residents can call (951) 358-7125.
