Mercury Insurance has announced a partnership with Liberty Mutual to provide coverage to thousands of California Safeco Insurance customers affected by changes in Liberty Mutual’s personal lines strategy.
According to the announcement, Liberty Mutual will advise its independent agents to transition impacted Safeco renters, condo, and select auto policies to Mercury Insurance. This move aims to maintain continuity for customers. Liberty Mutual Insurance, a Fortune 100 company with over 40,000 employees, offers property and casualty coverage worldwide and generates over $50 billion in annual revenue. Mercury will offer homeowners coverage in areas where other insurers have limited availability. The company has been selling insurance through independent agents for over 60 years.
As reported by the Zebra, as of 2025, the average annual homeowners’ insurance premium in Riverside, California, is approximately $1,005 or about $84 per month. In San Bernardino, California, the typical homeowners’ insurance policy costs about $71 per month. Both figures are lower than the national average.
MoneyGeek reports that Riverside’s average car insurance cost is $1,856 per year for full coverage and $878 for minimum coverage. In San Bernardino, the average is $1,294 per year for both full and minimum coverage.
“Mercury and Safeco have long had a healthy, competitive relationship,” said Gabriel Tirador, CEO of Mercury Insurance. “When Safeco approached us with the idea of transitioning their impacted customers into our portfolio,” Tirador said they saw an opportunity for Mercury to support California consumers and agents when needed most. “The result is a win for everyone — their customers and agents, Safeco and Mercury.”
