The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) held a ceremony on April 28 at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center in Hollywood, Maryland, to remember workers who were killed or injured while on the job. The event took place as part of Workers’ Memorial Day, an annual observance dedicated to honoring those lost in workplace incidents.
During the ceremony, IAM members who died over the past year were commemorated by having their names read aloud in front of their families and fellow union members. Fifteen names were added to the IAM Workers’ Memorial this year, including five individuals who lost their lives due to workplace accidents.
Jody Bennett, IAM Resident General Vice President, addressed those gathered by saying, “That is five too many. Far too many workers are still losing their lives simply for going to work, and that must never be acceptable. It is our No. 1 duty to protect our Brothers, Sisters, and Siblings.”
A recent report from the AFL-CIO highlights that many workplace injuries and fatalities remain preventable even decades after the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was established. The report calls attention to ongoing needs for stronger protections for all workers.
As part of its commitment moving forward, IAM said it will continue advocating for safer workplaces across industries while remembering those lost each year during this solemn occasion.
