The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) New Mexico State Council held a meeting in Ruidoso, New Mexico, bringing together union members from across the state. The event focused on strengthening organizing efforts, political engagement, and communication among local unions to enhance the IAM’s influence in workplaces and communities.
John Dyrcz, President of the IAM New Mexico State Council and a member of Local 794, opened the meeting by emphasizing unity and the importance of collaboration within the labor movement. “Our state council meeting went great,” said Dyrcz. “Over the past two days, we laid down a strong foundation for the 2026 election cycle and updated our bylaws to make sure we have solid ground for picking labor-friendly candidates and next year’s elections. I want to see continued participation, and I hope some new individuals will volunteer to give their time and talents to state council leadership. My message for our delegates is to stay engaged, activate, agitate, and organize.”
Dora Cervantes, IAM General Secretary-Treasurer, provided an update on the organization’s current status, discussing ongoing growth, recent contract achievements, and national campaigns aimed at advancing workers’ rights. Cervantes encouraged delegates to continue building on the union’s legacy of advocacy.
Robert “Bobby” Martinez, General Vice President for the Western Territory, addressed issues facing federal employees and contract workers. He highlighted IAM’s role in defending fair pay, benefits, and workplace protections for these workers.
Richie Johnsen, Air Transport Territory General Vice President, spoke about ongoing negotiations with airline carriers and urged members to support air transport campaigns. He noted that successes in one division have positive effects throughout the organization.
Josh Hartford, Special Assistant to the International President for the Rail Division, recognized Local 331’s first participation in the council meeting and discussed challenges in the rail industry. He emphasized the division’s commitment to providing members with a strong voice.
Other speakers included Loren Almeroth, Assistant Legislative and Political Director, and DeLane Adams, Assistant Communications Director.
The council also updated its bylaws in preparation for the 2026 election cycle and discussed ways to identify and support labor-friendly candidates in future elections. Delegates left with a renewed focus on building union strength through solidarity, improved communication, and active engagement in both political and workplace matters.
