IAM Local 1297 members at Libbey Glass in Toledo have been on strike since August 23, joining other unions to protest what they describe as unfair labor practices and the company’s failure to negotiate in good faith. The workers are seeking a fair contract and protection of rights that have been established by generations of glassworkers in the city.
Dan Canterbury, Chief Shop Steward for IAM Local 1297, said, “We’re standing together not just for ourselves, but for the next generation of glassmakers in Toledo. We take pride in what we do, and we’re determined to make sure these good union jobs stay strong in our community for years to come.”
The main concerns raised by union members include mandatory overtime that limits family time, efforts to remove key rights and protections from the union and its members, and increasing health insurance costs. Despite these challenges, IAM members report staying organized and united.
The IAM Union is working alongside three other unions representing over 500 employees at Libbey Glass. The unions have filed multiple Unfair Labor Practice charges against the company due to its continued refusal to bargain. Community support has played a significant role during the strike.
T. Dean Wright, Jr., President and Directing Business Representative of IAM District 54, stated: “Libbey Glass exists today because working people sacrificed to help this company through its hardest times. Now, our members are showing that same resolve — standing strong, organized, and unified as they fight for the respect and fairness they deserve. The community is standing with them every step of the way.”
Strike Captain Chris Emmitt noted community involvement: “It’s inspiring to see the community rally around these members. There’s pride on this line — people smiling, holding signs, supporting one another. We’re here because we believe in fairness and a better future for everyone at Libbey.”
David Sullivan, General Vice President of IAM Union Eastern Territory added: “I couldn’t be prouder of the solidarity and determination shown by our members at Libbey Glass. They’ve stood together with strength and dignity, backed by their community, to defend the rights and fairness that generations before them fought hard to achieve. The IAM Eastern Territory stands firmly behind them — and we will continue to support these members until they secure the fair contract they’ve earned.”
IAM leadership has expressed commitment to supporting striking workers until an agreement is reached.
Brian Bryant, International President of IAM Union said: “The IAM will use every resource at our disposal to defend our members’ rights. This is about fairness, respect, and ensuring that the next generation of Toledo’s glassworkers can build a future with dignity. Our members at Libbey are proving every day that when we stand together, we can win together.”
