IAM Union Western Territory General Vice President Robert “Bobby” Martinez recently visited members of IAM Local 1998 in Hawaii, highlighting the union’s commitment to its members and emphasizing their important role in national security and defense.

Local 1998, established in 1951, has a long history of representing workers in Hawaii. Over more than seventy years, it has contributed to the stability and growth of the IAM’s Western Territory. The local’s ongoing presence demonstrates the continued need for strong union representation and reflects the dedication of its members to solidarity and collective bargaining.

“Our Hawaiian members play a pivotal role in our union,” said GVP Martinez. “Their solidarity through cultural diversity is empowering and the role our members play in the name of national defense is felt from coast to coast.”

Martinez pointed out that Hawaii’s geographic location makes Local 1998 particularly significant for both economic reasons and national interests. Members are involved in industries essential to infrastructure and defense, making their work crucial not only for their employers but also for broader national objectives. He stated that these contributions go beyond individual workplaces, impacting overall national security.

Many members of Local 1998 support defense operations with their skills and professionalism, helping ensure readiness and mission success. Martinez noted that this responsibility is significant, requiring strong union support. He reiterated IAM’s commitment to protecting workers’ rights, negotiating fair contracts, and maintaining safe working conditions so that members can continue their work effectively.

The visit also highlighted the diversity within Local 1998. Reflecting Hawaii’s multicultural environment, the local brings together people from various backgrounds. Martinez described this diversity as a strength for both the local chapter and the wider Western Territory: “Their solidarity through cultural diversity is empowering.” He emphasized that unity among different communities supports the inclusive values of IAM.

During his time in Hawaii, Martinez met with members and leaders to discuss priorities and listen to concerns. His visit was intended to reinforce IAM International’s commitment to staying connected with locals throughout its territory.
