IAM District 6 members increased their involvement in supporting homeless veterans by making the Des Moines Stand Down an official event for the district’s HELPS initiative in 2025. IAM Locals throughout District 6 contributed funds, which were matched by the district, resulting in a total of $1,150 raised to support the effort. In addition to monetary donations, supplies were also provided. According to organizers, $750 is enough to supply 500 meals for those in need.

Thirteen members from three different IAM Locals volunteered at the event, with some traveling over three hours to participate. Their responsibilities included registration, food service, security, cleanup, and water delivery for hundreds of volunteers present at the site. The event served more than 500 people, including both veterans and civilians.

“Our veterans deserve more than gratitude, they deserve action,” said IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli. “I’m proud of the IAM members in District 6 who stepped up to honor their service by ensuring they and their families receive the support they need.”

IAM members worked alongside other volunteers to provide care packages, meals, and essential services aimed at helping veterans and their families through difficult times. District 6 has encouraged other IAM districts and locals to consider participating in Homeless Veterans Stand Down events within their own communities.
