A construction company based in Northern California has been chosen to replace several old bridges in Amboy, an unincorporated area west of Needles in San Bernardino County. Watsonville Construction will carry out the project under a $24 million contract with the county. The work involves removing and replacing deteriorating bridges along Route 66.
Funding for the project will come from both state and federal sources, though the specific breakdown of costs was not detailed.
Bill Moore, vice president of regional operations at Granite, stated, “Granite has a long history of improving infrastructure in the High Desert. This project not only strengthens a key transportation corridor, but the also reinforces our dedication to the communities we serve.”
The bridges scheduled for replacement are located on a segment of Route 66 that connects 29 Palms and Las Vegas, serving as an access route to the Mojave National Preserve. The main reason for replacement is that the current structures cannot adequately support traffic.
Construction is scheduled to start in December 2025 and is expected to finish in April.
