President Donald Trump has issued an Executive Order to establish the Genesis Mission, a national initiative led by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) aimed at advancing American science and innovation through artificial intelligence (AI). The mission is designed to boost the productivity and impact of U.S. science and engineering within ten years, with goals including breakthroughs in energy, scientific discovery, and national security.
Secretary of Energy Chris Wright stated, “Throughout history, from the Manhattan Project to the Apollo mission, our nation’s brightest minds and industries have answered the call when their nation needed them. Today, the United States is calling on them once again. Under President Trump’s leadership, the Genesis Mission will unleash the full power of our National Laboratories, supercomputers, and dataresources to ensure that America is the global leader in artificial intelligence and to usher in a new golden era of American discovery.”
The initiative builds upon previous directives such as President Trump’s Executive Order Removing Barriers to American Leadership In Artificial Intelligence and supports objectives outlined in America’s AI Action Plan released earlier this year. These measures are intended to remove obstacles for innovation, decrease reliance on foreign adversaries for technology resources, and maximize U.S. scientific capabilities.
Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil has been appointed as director of the Genesis Mission. The effort will involve all 17 DOE National Laboratories along with industry partners and academic institutions. The plan includes creating an integrated platform that connects advanced computing systems—including supercomputers, AI technologies, and quantum systems—with leading scientific instruments across the country.
This platform aims to be one of the most complex scientific tools ever built globally. It will engage approximately 40,000 DOE scientists, engineers, technical staff members as well as private sector contributors in developing future-defining technologies.
Key areas addressed by the Genesis Mission include:
– Accelerating progress toward American energy dominance through AI-driven advancements in nuclear power generation, fusion research, and grid modernization.
– Supporting quantum ecosystem development via collaboration between government investment initiatives and industry partnerships.
– Enhancing national security by applying advanced AI for defense purposes—ensuring nuclear stockpile safety—and accelerating creation of defense-ready materials.
Dr. Darío Gil commented on his role: “The Genesis Mission marks a defining moment for the next era of American science. We are linking the nation’s most advanced facilities, data, and computing into one closed-loop system to create a scientific instrument for the ages, an engine for discovery that doubles R&D productivity and solves challenges once thought impossible.”
Brandon Williams from the National Nuclear Security Administration said: “The Genesis Mission represents the next great chapter and an unparallelled opportunity for America’s scientific and national security leadership… Building on decades of innovation and collaboration across our national laboratories, NNSA will leverage AI, quantum computing, and advanced data analytics that will strengthen our deterrents and ensure the United States maintains an unmatched strategic edge over our adversaries. Under President Trump’s leadership this mission will embody the very best of American ingenuity turning science and innovation into security.”
Dr. John Wagner from DOE’s National Laboratory Directors’ Council added: “DOE’s National Laboratories are engines of discovery that keep United States competitive secure… The Genesis Mission unlocks full potential these institutions by giving scientists engineers tools work speed innovation… Our laboratories always risen meet nation’s greatest challenges this initiative ensures continue legacy age artificial intelligence.”
