The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced more than $320 million in funding to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) research as part of the Genesis Mission. This investment aligns with President Trump’s Working Families Tax Cut and other DOE appropriations aimed at advancing “AI for science” initiatives.

According to DOE Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil, “Thanks to President Trump’s Working Families Tax Cut, the Department of Energy is proud to advance AI investments to ensure American technological leadership and accelerate scientific discovery. By investing in the American Science Cloud and the Transformational AI Model Consortium we are creating the foundational technologies and AI-ready data sets that will enable the success of the Genesis Mission.”

The funding will support four main initiatives:

– The American Science Cloud (AmSC), which will serve as a central platform for hosting and distributing AI models and scientific data. AmSC aims to make DOE’s extensive AI-ready datasets accessible to national laboratories, industry, and research partners.
– The Transformational AI Models Consortium (ModCon), which focuses on developing self-improving AI models using DOE’s data, facilities, and expertise. These efforts are intended to provide foundational capabilities across various scientific and engineering fields.
– Fourteen projects in robotics and automation will work on transforming laboratory environments by introducing intelligent systems, advanced automation, and robotics into large-scale experiments.
– Thirty-seven foundational AI awards will support projects that curate existing data and develop refined AI models combining experimental results with theoretical knowledge. These projects aim to create robust, reliable AI systems for scientific use, capable of analyzing large datasets from studies, experiments, and simulations.

The department expects these initiatives to help secure U.S. energy leadership, strengthen national security, and boost scientific productivity over the next decade.
