Construction has started on a new 30-unit housing complex for homeless veterans in San Bernardino, according to a March 31 announcement by U.S. VETS Inland Empire.

The project aims to address the needs of an estimated 500 veterans who are currently without stable housing in the city. Penny Sachs, development and communications manager for U.S. VETS Inland Empire, said the $28 million development at 1351 N. E St. broke ground on March 25 and is expected to be completed by March 2027.

Sachs said that getting these individuals into permanent homes is important both for their well-being and for improving conditions in the city. “It’s very important that we get those people into housing, for their sake and to help clean up the city,” Sachs said.

The three-story building will include a mix of units: twenty-one one-bedroom apartments and nine two-bedroom apartments. The site is located at North E Street and 13th Street on land donated by Holocaust survivor John Boruchin and his wife Dora to the Jewish National Fund, with instructions that it be used specifically to help homeless veterans.

Funding for most of the project comes from San Bernardino city and county sources. The new complex will serve veterans and their families earning no more than half of the area’s median income, regardless of where they currently reside.
