The U.S. Census Bureau will begin an embargo on the 2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates starting September 9, 2025, at 10 a.m. Eastern Time. The embargoed data will be available to approved subscribers until the public release on September 11.
The ACS collects and provides statistics about people and housing in the United States, including information on language spoken at home, education levels, commuting patterns, employment status, mortgage and rent details, income, poverty rates, and health insurance coverage. It is recognized as the only source of local estimates for many of these topics.
Subscribers with embargo access will receive early data covering all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, all congressional districts and metropolitan statistical areas, as well as other geographic regions with populations of at least 65,000.
Access to these statistics under embargo is limited from Tuesday morning on September 9 through just after midnight on Thursday, September 11. During this period, wire services and distribution outlets are not allowed to publish or share news stories or data files before the official public release time. Additional details about these restrictions can be found in the Census Bureau’s embargo policy. Once released publicly at https://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/embargoed_releases by 10 a.m. ET on September 11, all related data products—including those available via data.census.gov and its API—will become accessible to everyone.
To sign up for embargo access or learn more about registration requirements and policies regarding advance release materials from the Census Bureau, interested parties should visit the agency’s website.
