The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has released new immunization guidance for the upcoming respiratory virus season, in collaboration with health authorities from Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii. The recommendations are intended to provide clear and science-based information to Californians as they prepare for increased circulation of respiratory viruses.

State officials emphasized that vaccines remain a key measure against COVID-19, influenza, and RSV. They highlighted the importance of seasonal immunization in reducing serious illness, limiting community transmission, and easing pressure on health care systems.

“Immunization is safe, effective, and the best protection available against COVID-19, influenza, and RSV, three viruses of concern. Seasonal immunization is also a critical public health tool to reduce serious illness, community transmission, and health care systems strain,” according to state public health officials.

This week saw the signing of Assembly Bill 144 by Governor Gavin Newsom. The legislation requires that CDPH’s immunization recommendations be based on evidence from recognized national medical organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). The new law aims to ensure that vaccine access remains consistent across pharmacies, clinics, and other providers.

“These recommendations are also in alignment with the shared principles of the West Coast Health Alliance. An important shared goal of our four states is to ensure that COVID-19, influenza and RSV vaccines remain accessible,” according to CDPH.

The state says changes in law will help maintain insurance coverage for necessary vaccines during this period.
