The Edison International and Southern California Edison (SCE) communities are mourning the death of Bob Foster, who played a significant role in shaping energy policy in California. Foster was recognized for his leadership during the state’s energy crisis in the early 2000s.
Pedro J. Pizarro, president and CEO of Edison International, stated, “Bob was instrumental in guiding SCE through the California energy crisis and helping the company survive severe financial challenges. Under his leadership, SCE developed the largest portfolio of renewable energy programs in the United States. His impact on California’s clean energy future is still felt today.”
Foster began working at SCE in 1984 as head of its Sacramento office, where he served as a main contact to state lawmakers and agencies handling energy issues. He rose through several senior roles before becoming SCE president in 2002.
In addition to his corporate work, Foster contributed to various organizations. He served on boards such as the California Foundation on the Environment and Economy and the Long Beach Aquarium. He was also a trustee for the California State University system.
After retiring from SCE in September 2005, Foster expressed appreciation for his time at the company: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my career at SCE and believe it is a company of outstanding character. I now want to serve the community and state in public service. I want to thank all of the SCE employees for the opportunity to work with them over the last 21 years. This has been a rich experience that has resulted in many wonderful friendships and accomplishments.”
Foster was elected mayor of Long Beach in 2006, serving two terms until 2014. During his tenure as mayor, he also held the position of chairman at the California Independent System Operator.
Edison International extended condolences to Foster’s wife Nancy and his family.
