Amazon is seeking an Operations Engineer for its Amazon Logistics (AMZL) Start-Up Execution team, according to a recent announcement. The position involves leading and managing the lifecycle of cross-functional projects focused on developing sortation and distribution solutions.

The role requires planning and implementing facility network infrastructure, including new builds, retrofits, expansions, and program initiatives. Operations Engineers will work closely with internal customers and both internal and external stakeholders to ensure timely project handover.

Key responsibilities include working independently with various teams to manage challenging projects that may span different organizations or geographies. The Operations Engineer will participate in engineering reviews, influence proposed solutions at both system and component levels, set project priorities, establish milestones, drive schedules to meet deadlines, lead execution efforts for systems and automated equipment designs, perform installations and safety qualifications, simplify processes by removing bottlenecks, and resolve technical deficiencies.

Additional duties involve leading meetings by setting objectives and ensuring appropriate participation, documenting discussions and decisions for alignment on expectations with partners and vendors, communicating project status updates including risk analysis to leadership teams, articulating system designs to stakeholders, managing change orders and purchase orders, building strong relationships across projects, identifying process improvement opportunities for better efficiency within engineering teams, generating cost-effective solutions quickly through collaboration, and traveling domestically up to 80% of the time depending on project needs.

The daily routine includes overseeing implementation quality across multiple projects of varying scope. Tasks may involve site coordination with operations teams and contractors on execution activities or changes; reviewing project progress; addressing scheduling or resource barriers; facilitating planning meetings; documenting notes for follow-up actions; approving audit mechanisms; tracking installation opportunities with automation teams; developing workaround solutions for delays or design issues; conducting acceptance testing for quality assurance; communicating progress regularly to stakeholders; supporting or training other engineers using Amazon’s safety standards.

Amazon describes its team as diverse—composed of engineers and managers who focus on delivering capabilities that fulfill the Customer Promise. Continuous improvement is emphasized through ongoing enhancements to system designs based on lessons learned from previous projects.

Applicants should have at least four years’ experience in industrial engineering or related fields within manufacturing environments as well as a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering or another STEM field. Experience managing cross-functional projects involving automated equipment is required. Proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD is expected. Additional skills such as knowledge of VBA or SQL at an intermediate level are preferred along with experience working with third-party vendors or familiarity with Six Sigma/lean manufacturing practices. A Master’s degree is considered an asset.

Amazon states: “Amazon is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status.”

For applicants in Los Angeles County: “Job duties for this position include: work safely and cooperatively with other employees, supervisors, and staff; adhere to standards of excellence despite stressful conditions; communicate effectively and respectfully with employees…and follow all federal, state, and local laws and Company policies…Pursuant to the Los Angeles County Fair Chance Ordinance we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.”

Compensation varies by geographic market from $68,900/year up to $126,400/year based on location as well as job-related knowledge or experience.
