Amazon Advertising is seeking an Applied Scientist to join its growing team. The company describes its advertising division as one of its fastest expanding and most profitable areas, offering native advertising solutions that help merchants, retail vendors, and brand owners increase product sales on Amazon. The team’s main objectives are to assist shoppers in discovering new products, provide efficient tools for advertisers to achieve their goals, and develop a sustainable business through ongoing innovation.

According to Amazon, the role involves significant contributions in machine learning across teams. Responsibilities include analyzing large datasets to generate insights aimed at boosting traffic monetization and merchandise sales while maintaining the quality of the shopper experience. The scientist will lead end-to-end machine learning projects characterized by high levels of ambiguity, scale, and complexity. Other tasks include building models, conducting experiments such as A/B testing, optimizing and deploying models into production environments in collaboration with software engineers, and establishing automated processes for data analysis and model validation.

The company highlights the opportunity for impact and career growth in this position: “You will invent new experiences and influence customer-facing shopping experiences to help suppliers grow their retail business and the auction dynamics that leverage native advertising; this is your opportunity to work within the fastest-growing businesses across all of Amazon! Define a long-term science vision for our advertising business, driven from our customers’ needs, translating that direction into specific plans for research and applied scientists, as well as engineering and product teams. This role combines science leadership, organizational ability, technical strength, product focus, and business understanding.”

Candidates are expected to have at least three years of experience building models for business applications along with relevant educational qualifications such as a PhD or a Master’s degree with four years’ experience in computer science or related fields. Proficiency in programming languages like Java, C++, or Python is required as well as experience with algorithms, data structures, numerical optimization, data mining or high-performance computing.

The position requires familiarity with Unix/Linux environments and professional software development practices. For applicants from Los Angeles County, additional job duties include working safely with colleagues under stressful conditions while adhering to legal standards.

Amazon states: “Amazon is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status.” The company emphasizes its inclusive culture that supports workplace accommodations during hiring.

Compensation varies by geographic market with base pay ranging from $136,000 to $223,400 annually depending on factors such as location and candidate qualifications. Additional compensation may be offered through equity or sign-on bonuses along with benefits including medical coverage. Further details about benefits can be found at https://www.aboutamazon.com/workplace/employee-benefits.

Applications are accepted until the position is filled via Amazon’s career site.
