Amazon Pharmacy has reported that its customers have saved more than $100 million on prescription medications through the automatic application of manufacturer-sponsored coupons to eligible orders. The company says this approach is designed to make it easier for patients, particularly those managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and obesity, to afford their medications.
“For patients, finding and applying medication coupons has traditionally been a tedious, confusing process involving searching online, downloading forms, enrolling in programs, or calling drug manufacturers directly,” said Tanvi Patel, vice president and GM of Amazon Pharmacy. “We believe it should be much easier for patients to find and afford their prescribed medications.”
The largest savings have come from GLP-1 medications used for weight management and insulin for diabetes care. EpiPens for severe allergic reactions have also contributed significantly to customer savings. Amazon Pharmacy works with various manufacturers to integrate discount programs into its platform so that eligible patients receive these benefits automatically at checkout.
Amazon Pharmacy also offers other ways for customers to save on prescriptions. Amazon Prime members can use the PrimeRx benefit for discounts of up to 80% off generic drugs and 40% off brand-name medications at over 60,000 pharmacies nationwide—including Amazon Pharmacy—when paying without insurance. Eligible Prime members can enroll in RxPass, which provides unlimited access to certain prescription drugs for $5 per month with free shipping. Most insurance plans are accepted by Amazon Pharmacy, which also provides free delivery on all orders.
Customers can have their healthcare providers send prescriptions directly to Amazon Pharmacy or transfer existing prescriptions themselves. Medications are delivered in secure packaging with real-time updates available, and pharmacists are accessible around the clock.
Amazon Pharmacy delivers medications across the United States and offers same-day delivery in several major cities including Austin, Indianapolis, Los Angeles (and Corona metro area), Miami, New York City, Phoenix, Orlando, Seattle, Detroit metropolitan area, among others.
The company plans to expand its automatic coupon program further so more patients can save time and money on necessary prescriptions.
