Amazon has announced a redesigned lineup of its Kindle Scribe devices, introducing new features aimed at improving productivity and user experience. The latest range includes the first color Kindle Scribe, called the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft.
The updated Kindle Scribe features a design that is 5.4mm thick, weighs 400 grams, and is equipped with an 11-inch glare-free display. According to Amazon, the device is “40% faster for writing and page turns.” The larger screen size is intended to provide a paper-like feel for notetaking and reviewing documents.
A new front light system uses miniaturized LEDs to create a narrower bezel and more uniform lighting. The display incorporates texture-molded glass for increased friction when using the pen and a rearchitected display stack that reduces parallax. The device also comes with a quad-core chip, more memory, and Amazon’s Oxide display technology.
The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft introduces color writing using custom-built Colorsoft display technology. This technology uses a color filter and nitride LEDs to enhance color while aiming to reduce eye strain compared to traditional LCD displays. Amazon states: “To deliver an incredible color writing experience, we developed a new rendering engine, which enhances the color and ensures writing is fast, fluid, and totally natural.”
Battery life remains measured in weeks rather than days or hours. The devices are designed without apps or notifications that could distract users.
Productivity enhancements include an AI-powered notebook allowing natural search across notebooks with AI-generated summaries. Other features include Quick Notes from the Home screen, integration with Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive for document import/export, as well as support for exporting notes to OneNote. Users can write or highlight in multiple colors and use shading tools for artistic work.
Amazon also highlighted new reading features powered by AI such as Story So Far—which provides spoiler-free recaps—and Ask this Book—which allows users to get answers about characters or scenes without revealing spoilers. These will be available on thousands of books in the U.S., both on Kindle devices early next year and through the Kindle iOS app later this year.
Kindle Scribe comes with three months of Kindle Unlimited membership included, giving access to millions of digital books, audiobooks, comics, and magazines.
Device durability testing continues at Lab126 in Sunnyvale, California where products undergo rigorous trials before release.
