Amazon announced on May 5 the availability of a Senior Operations Engineer position. The role will lead and manage cross-functional projects focused on developing and delivering new sortation and distribution solutions. The engineer will be responsible for planning and implementing facility network infrastructure, including new builds, retrofits, expansions, and program initiatives.

The position is significant as it involves working with internal customers and stakeholders to ensure timely project handover. Candidates are expected to manage technology or integration projects from design through delivery, often collaborating directly with external equipment vendors or partners. Amazon said that applicants should have a solid understanding of industry technologies used in fulfillment and distribution center designs.

Key responsibilities include independently managing complex project lifecycles across organizations and geographies, participating in engineering reviews, partnering with teams to set priorities, leading execution of system designs according to established standards, facilitating effective meetings, communicating project status clearly to leadership, managing change orders efficiently, building strong stakeholder relationships across multiple projects, identifying process improvement opportunities for efficiency gains, and traveling up to 80% domestically.

Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering or another STEM field along with at least eight years of relevant experience. Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree in engineering or business administration; experience in Lean Management or Six Sigma; operations management experience related to material handling or automation; proficiency with CAD software such as AutoCAD; technical leadership on industrial engineering projects; familiarity with Microsoft Project or Smartsheet programs; and direct involvement in designing automation solutions like conveyors or robotic work cells.
